A Poem (“At the Time of Departure”)

If only, my beloved, we had known beforehand when the time of departure would come to us, we would have tried to fight it and prevent it from happening. And if we had chosen something else—that is, any alternative.

And we seized every beautiful moment that brought us together—moments that were truly one-of-a-kind—and we let go of all the reasons for our quarrels and the days when we we had acted shamefully.

And we did not allow sadness to enter our hearts with its bitter pain, so that it might cast its heavy burden of wounds upon us, nor did we let joy pass us by, even if we had to run after it a thousand-mile journey.

And we clung to one another’s embrace with all our strength in a long, enduring embrace, and we built for ourselves a palace high in the heavens, the reach of which is impossible.

We live there alone, our souls wandering in the clarity of its air and the purity of its gentle breeze, and in its courtyard we created a garden of flowers that we water with our feelings, surrounded by our love, like palm trees.

And there we distance ourselves from the people who ruined our story and wounded us with their endless gossip, causing our eyes to weep tears as if they were torrential rains that drowned the crown

of joy and glory.

For they have set their traps in our lives and insisted on destroying them; they have surrounded them with all manner of obstacles and fired arrows of treachery at our happiness, and they have not relented until love lay slain.

And they kindled fires in our hearts and burned them with separation until not a single friend remained for our memories, and they buried our feelings along with them beneath a sand dune of lies, for there is no proof of their truth.

And they extinguished the light of longing in our hearts, even though its glow had once shone within us like lanterns, and they concealed the face of hatred in their friendship beneath a mask adorned of noble friendship.

Their hatred gnawed at us as if it were a plague that crept into the body of our dignity, gradually reducing it to a frail, withered shell. Thus they triumphed through their wickedness, our cause was defeated, and th

e distance is the only way.
